Fleiss- Giacummo- McAvoy NY Contemporary Art Symposium 2015

The Islip Art Museum Announces the Events and Exhibitions of the New York Contemporary Art Symposium 2015 International Artist Residency, October 16-31, 2015
EAST ISLIP, NY, OCTOBER 17, 2015 - The Islip Art Museum (IAM) announces the events and exhibitions of the New York Contemporary Arts Symposium 2015 (NYCAS) international artist residency program. NYCAS is a program of IAM in collaboration with D. Fleiss & East West Artists International (DFEWA). The program seeks to encourage and to improve the cultural and artistic exchange between outstanding artists of varying historical backgrounds originating from eastern and western countries. On October 16th twelve international artists and a handful of U.S. artists arrived on the south shore of Long Island to participate. NYCAS runs through October 31, 2015.
Program Co-Curator Jessica McAvoy praised the program's ability to foster cross-cultural collaboration and introduce international artists to the culture, arts, and history of Long Island while introducing Long Island to the arts and culture of the participating artists. Jessica stated "NYCAS encourages and improves cultural exchange between artists and collaborative communities. Ideas and technique are shared during the residency between artists and hosting communities, and in turn then shared among the artists' own respective communities when they return home. Cultural exchange keeps the world's heartbeat going strong."

NYCAS brings artists and art professionals from around the world together to form new networks, foster international connections, develop cross-cultural understanding, and cultivate cooperation. The symposium provides twelve international and a few national artists with housing, studio space, all meals, trips to cultural centers, and selected artist supplies at no cost. By lifting these financial burdens the artists are free to explore their creativity with themselves and the surrounding community through a series of public events arranged by the IAM in East Islip and the Patchogue Arts Council (PAC) in Patchogue.

The New York Contemporary Arts Symposium is a passion project of Founder and Co- Director Beth Giacummo. Beth states: "On behalf of the Islip Art Museum I believe through these artistic cultural exchanges barriers are broken and mutual admiration and new found inspiration from one another's culture and art is cultivated. It is my goal to support and encourage cultural exchanges and interactions between our international and local arts communities so that artists can build new professional relationships and continue to create new works with a renewed sense of community. It is an honor to host artists from around the world and share in their experiences here in New York and Long Island."
Participating artists are exposed to the arts in NY with trips to the Jackson-Pollock House and the Parrish Art Museum in Southampton, and the Museum of Modern Art and a selection of galleries in NYC. In addition, a number of free to the public and paid events featuring the participants are held at the Islip Art Museum in East Islip, and in Patchogue at the Patchogue Arts Gallery, the Gallery at Shand's Loft at the BrickHouse, and Gallery 40.
